The Power of Self-Compassion in Medicine
You are invited to join this noontime online workshop to explore the importance of self-compassion in medicine. Recent research indicates that physicians who had more self-compassion were more resilient, felt less physically and emotionally exhausted, and were more satisfied with their professional life. Fortunately, self-compassion is a skill that can be learned and developed through practice.
During the session, you will learn the science of compassion, the numerous health benefits it can yield in the medical field and beyond, and practical steps you can take to become more compassionate toward yourself. The class will conclude with a guided self-compassion meditation that you can use in your daily life.
While this session will focus on self-compassion in medicine, anyone will benefit from the ideas and practices presented in the workshop.
Instructors: Al’ai Alvarez, MD, FACEP, FAAEM, is an assistant clinical professor in emergency medicine, assistant program director in the Stanford Emergency Medicine Residency Program, and co-chair of the Stanford WellMD’s Physician Wellness Forum. He has given several grand rounds and national conference lectures and workshops on relevant topics in gratitude and compassion, physician well-being, burnout, and the imposter syndrome.
Maryam Makowski, PhD, FACN, is a clinical assistant professor at the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and member of the Stanford Medicine WellMD and WellPhD Center team. She is also a BeWell nutrition coach.
Rachel Roberts, MD, is a general internist who has led the well-being efforts at University HealthCare Alliance as the Director of Provider Wellness for five years. She has given talks on self-compassion at national conferences and for local groups. She is also co-directing the Stanford WellMD Physician Well-Being Directors course.
