Stanford Behavior Change/Weight Management Program

HIP's Behavior Change/Weight Management Program helps participants gradually change life-long habits related to nutrition, physical activity, weight management, and stress management. Program participation consists of (a) taking an online health assessment, (b) meeting one-on-one with a health coach, and (c) attending 22 small group sessions over a 10-month period.

Participants meet in small groups (10-15 people) with a trained facilitator. In the groups, participants set short-term behavioral goals that they work on between sessions. They discuss their progress, obstacles, and strategies with one another in the groups. The facilitator also leads a discussion on a topic related either to behavioral science (e.g., staying motivated, build a support network), or on a topic more directly related to weight loss (e.g., nutrition and physical activity). The program does not provide participants with a diet or exercise plan. Rather, the program philosophy is that participants come up with their own goals, with input from the facilitator and other group members.

This group is for individuals who:
Can commit to attending most of the group sessions for the full 10 month period
Believe in a gradual approach to behavior change
Like the idea of a long-term program
Do well in a group setting
Are ready to take responsibility for their own health

Cost is $400 for Stanford employees and their families and $450 for Stanford Hospital & clinic staff and family members. STAP funds and Tuition Assistance may be used by eligible University and Hospital employees.

The next group will start in Spring 2008 and periodically thereafter. Contact Debbie Balfanz at (650) 725-3185 for more information.
